Katela is a growing group of digital products, automated vending machines and hospitality services. It began with a personal need in our own home and has grown into infrastructure that households, property owners and businesses across South Africa rely on every day.
When my husband and I married, we set out to build a home we loved coming back to. I was also working full time as a software engineer, and it did not take long to see the gap. Long days at a desk and longer drives home left very little of the evening for the laundry, the bins and the hundred small things a home asks for.
We did not want to choose between our careers and our space. We wanted both to work.
I did what engineers do and turned the problem into a system. First a shared plan for the chores, then reminders that ran on their own, then simple ways to keep essentials stocked without another dash to the shops after work.
What began after hours quickly proved itself. The systems worked, our evenings came back, and it became clear this was bigger than one household.
Friends, colleagues and the businesses around us were facing the same pressure at a far larger scale. If these systems could give one family its time back, they could do the same for homes, buildings and organisations across Mzansi. That conviction became Katela.
Today Katela designs, builds and operates products across software, automated vending machines and short-term living. Each one is engineered to scale, supported by our own team, and held to the same standard we set for our own home.
